Position announcement – Kansas State University

The Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Kansas State University seeks a dynamic scholar to lead the A. Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications into its second century in the changing world of communications. The Miller School offers B.A./B.S. degrees in public relations, advertising, and journalism and digital media as well as a master’s program with emphases in areas such as health and risk communication. The new director will provide leadership in the achievement of the University’s goal to be recognized as a Top 50 Public Research University by 2025 http://www.k-state.edu/2025.

The director oversees the educational and extracurricular activities of the School. These include student media (TV, radio, advertising and PR agency), the Media Convergence Center, Huck Boyd Center for Community Media, National Headquarters for the Journalism Education Association, and the Great Plains Radio History Symposium. The director coordinates relationships with KSDB-FM, the TakeFlight advertising and public relations agency, the Royal Purple yearbook and the Collegian daily newspaper.

The director also coordinates with other departments and colleges on campus, works with the JMC advisory council of alumni, professionals and friends of the School, and engages in fundraising efforts for new initiatives and to increase the School’s endowment. The director should maintain an active research agenda and will teach one course a year.

The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate degree in communications or a related field, a successful track record of peer-reviewed publications and extramural funding commensurate with tenure and senior rank at a major research university; a strong record of teaching and professional service; administrative experiences necessary to lead department’s three focus areas in public relations, advertising, journalism and digital media; a demonstrated ability to work with diverse faculty and students; and a knowledge of ACEJMC accreditation standards.

Position announcement – Pennsylvania State University

The Institute for Information Policy at the College of Communications at the Pennsylvania State University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to support the establishment of a new online journal and a new academic research forum. This is a two-year non-renewable full time position beginning in August 2010.

The appointee will be expected to support the work of the Institute in establishing the journal and research forum, to serve as managing editor of the journal, once established, and to contribute to the ongoing work of the Institute. The appointee is also expected to participate in the preparation and presentation of research generated at the Institute, and author, co†author or collaborate on reports, conference papers, publications and other outputs. The appointee will be encouraged to further develop her or his own research interests. An opportunity to teach in the College’s undergraduate program may also be available for additional compensation.

A Ph.D. in communications or a related field obtained by the time of appointment and a research focus in communication and information policy is required. A publication record in the field is an advantage.

The Institute for Information Policy (IIP), created in 1997 in the College of Communications, conducts sponsored research and self-funded programs on the social implications of information technology, with an emphasis on the potential of information technologies for improving democratic discourse, social responsibility, and quality of life. Fourth Annual National Conference on Health Communication, Marketing, and Media

Abstract Submission website is now open with a submission deadline of April 25, 2010.

The conference planning committee invites abstracts for both oral and poster presentations in addition to panel sessions focusing on the areas of health communication, social marketing, media, partnerships, public health policy communication, and other topic areas that relate to the multi-disciplinary nature of this conference. A wide diversity of submissions are encouraged, addressing specific issues and approaches that range from- research and evaluation, and theory/model development to practice/program-based foci.

Abstracts will be reviewed and considered for oral, poster, or panel presentations.

Fellowships for Journalists

The American Council on Germany offers three distinct fellowships to enable journalists to explore timely topics in depth overseas while broadening their personal and professional perspectives.

Journalists who are U.S. citizens and who are based in the United States are eligible to apply for the McCloy Fellowships in Journalism. The fellowship program covers transatlantic travel and pre-approved inter-city travel, together with a per diem of $200 for 21 days. Fellows have the option to extend for up to seven additional days if a compelling need is demonstrated. Applicants for the McCloy Fellowships are considered once a year in the spring by an external jury of distinguished journalists. From 2001 to 2007, the Council also offered American journalists the opportunity to travel under the auspices of the ACG Journalism Fellowships.

Journalists who are German citizens and who are based in Germany are also eligible to apply for the McCloy Fellowships in Journalism, and Berlin-based journalists are eligible to apply for the Anna-Maria and Stephen M. Kellen Fellowships. The McCloy Fellowships cover transatlantic travel and pre-approved inter-city travel, and provide a per diem of $200 for up to 21 days, with an option to extend the fellowship for an additional week. Applicants for the McCloy Fellowships are considered by the ACG once a year in the spring. The Kellen Fellowships cover transatlantic travel and pre-approved inter-city travel, and provide a per diem of $200 for up to 28 days. Kellen Fellowships may also include an orientation session in New York City if the timing of the fellowship coincides with a New York-based event which is of interest to all fellows, followed by individual research and reporting, either in New York or in other areas of the country. Applicants for the Kellen Fellowships are considered once a year by the ACG in the spring.
